As with most businesses, it is customary to send gifts to clients at Christmas time. Each year, in order to stand-out from the crowd, this practice becomes ever more a game of one-upmanship between competing companies to send the trendiest computer bags money can buy, expensive jackets, shirts, toques, sleeping bags, blankets, CD box sets, umbrellas...and the list goes on.
This trend of gift giving has never sat well with Kate Bate, Executive Producer at Relish Editing in Toronto. Not only did she feel it wouldn’t benefit her business to send these types of gifts, she also felt the money spent seemed like such a waste. Kate decided that she would make a difference and give something really worthwhile.
Relish and Rethink Breast Cancer both opened their doors in 2001 and every year since, Relish has been sending digital holiday cards to their clients announcing that in lieu of gifts, they would be donating money to Rethink Breast Cancer.
Although Kate initially decided to give to Rethink because of her own connection to the cause (she lost her sister to breast cancer), she also knew that Rethink’s upbeat approach to the cause fit well with her roster of young, culturally aware, creative, and forward thinking clients. Kate told us “The feedback from our clients was incredibly positive. Most of them said it was a refreshing change from the norm and really appreciated the gesture.”
