How your contributions enable us achieve our mission.

Where does the money come from?

Rethink Breast Cancer is entirely donor and partner funded. In 2008 our largest sources of funds were provided by our corporate partners and fundraising events hosted by Rethink and other individuals, communities and organizations. Other sources of revenue are from the sale of Fashion Targets Breast Cancer apparel and corporate and individual donations. Rethink’s average cost of fundraising is 21% (over years 2000-2008) which is very much in line with the Canadian Revenue Agency proposed guidelines.

Where the money goes

Rethink Education and Awareness

Rethink’s innovative education and awareness programs are designed to appeal to and educate a young discerning audience. Using the acclaimed Fashion Targets Breast Cancer campaign we remind women to target their breasts using a mixture of television, radio and print ads in addition to screen time in Dundas Square in Toronto and of course the t-shirts themselves. In 2008 our other main education focus was Breast Fest, the world’s first ever film festival about breast cancer.

Rethink Support Programs

In response to requests from young women Rethink is providing support to young women with breast cancer. Rethink funds the peer to peer phone based support program which provides real time valuable support from highly trained peer counselors. Another source of support is Breast Cancer Now What an online information and support website funded by Rethink. Recognizing the unique needs of young mothers diagnosed with breast cancer Rethink developed a support program, Support Saturdays which offers counseling and support for the whole family.

Rethink Research

Rethink’s Career Development Awards provide promising young Canadian researchers with an opportunity to pursue training in translational breast cancer research under the guidance and mentorship of a top supervisor.

The program is an excellent way to bring scientists—including clinician scientists—who have shown productivity and creativity early in their careers into breast cancer research. We must keep training talented young investigators if we are to continue to make progress in the fight against breast cancer in Canada. These mentored awards enable Rethink to attract some of the most promising talent available.

Rethink Breast Cancer is committed to ensuring funds contributed are spent in a prudent and responsible manner and are going to much needed support, research and education. To this end Rethink uses the Good Works Index as a guide to this process. The Good Works Index is one of the most common ways of evaluating the work of non-profit organizations. A Good Works Index of at least 60% should be achieved according to charity watchdogs. Rethink is pleased to report a Good Works Index of 64% for fiscal year 2008.
